Wellbutrin Lawsuit Information

It has long since been the angle of large pharmaceutical companies to market antidepressants towards young women - and for the most part, it is a marketing angle that has worked. Unfortunately, many of these women who have turned towards these antidepressants to alleviate the symptoms of depression have been pregnant and had been completely unaware of the consequences that they could sustain from the taking of these drugs. Over the years, studies have continued to reveal the dangers of these dangerous drugs and the results have been harrowing.

Overview of the Side Effects of Wellbutrin

One of the most popular of the antidepressants on the market is known as Wellbutrin, generic name bupropion, which is also used as an aid to smoking cessation. This is one of the best sellers for GlaxoSmithKline and differs from many drugs on the market used to treat depression. Typically, antidepressants are classified as what is known as a SSRI, which work to increase the serotonin levels in the consumer. Changing serotonin levels in the brain cells has been believed to boost mood, however, is still medically disputed as to the level of effectiveness.

Wellbutrin, on the other hand, is known as a NDRI and instead works to deal with the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. This, however, is not without its risks and over the years, it has been shown to have several. While double-blind studies have shown that it is effective for treating clinical depression, it has also been shown to cause a plethora of adverse side effects. This includes everything from headaches to nausea, seizures and even hypertension.

Wellbutrin & Birth Defects: Pregnancy Complications

For pregnant women, however, the problems are much more complex. Unfortunately, many women in the early trimesters of pregnancy can experience severe depression (amplified should they attempt to quit smoking for the health of their child). In an attempt to counteract this, many women have turned towards antidepressants such as Wellbutrin hoping to alleviate the symptoms of the depression while protecting their children from the negative side effects.

Smoking, it turns out, was not the only concern that pregnant women should have. Thanks to a National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS), the ties between pregnant women taking this antidepressant and pregnancy complications have been strengthened. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the study is an on-going effort to look into over thirty different birth defects and the taking of both Wellbutrin and other antidepressants containing bupropion.

The findings? Between October 1997 and December 2004, there were over 12,000 infants which were evaluated. Over 6,000 of these infants had a minimum of one out of four of the major heart birth defects; over 5,000 had at least one type of noncardiac birth defect. Some of the most common birth defects associated with the taking of Wellbutrin include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension;
  • Abdominal birth defects;
  • Cardiovascular problems; and
  • Cranial birth defects

In fact, in a study reported by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, it was also found that pregnant women who used bupropion in the early stages of pregnancy also left their children vulnerable to suffering from what is known as left outflow tract heart defects. Even the manufacturers of the drug, GlaxoSmithKline, had created a study known as the Bupropion Pregnancy Registry to track the possibility of pregnancy complications.

Over the span of a year, it was discovered that 3% of the 650 infants that were studied had experienced congenital anomalies and 1.5% of them had a heart defect. Unfortunately, due to voluntary recruitment and the source of the reporting, it is believed that these results could be biased and could be inconclusive or lacking in the necessary amounts of information.
